Catalonia has no monetary authority of its own, and these pieces are not legal tender under Spanish or EU law. They are issued by private entities capitalizing on regional identity politics — collectibles dressed as coins, with no official standing whatsoever. The "diners" denomination references the medieval Catalan currency historically used in the Crown of Aragon, extinct since the Bourbon monetary reforms of the early eighteenth century following the War of the Spanish Succession.
