Issued to mark the twentieth anniversary of Tunisia's independence and Habib Bourguiba's return from exile in 1955, this piece belongs to a broader campaign of commemorative gold coinage that the Bourguiba government used deliberately to project national legitimacy abroad and attract hard currency at home. By 1975, Bourguiba had already had himself declared President for Life, and state commemoratives of this period functioned as much as political instruments as numismatic objects.
KM#361 was struck in limited numbers for the collector market rather than circulation, with distribution handled largely through international coin dealers and diplomatic channels.
