Issued to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Néo-Destour party's reorganization under Bourguiba as the Parti Socialiste Destourien, this piece belongs to a pattern of Tunisian commemorative gold coinage that the Banque Centrale used selectively through the 1970s and 1980s to mark political milestones of the ruling party. The PSD held a constitutional monopoly on political power in Tunisia from 1963 until the 1987 coup that removed Bourguiba — meaning this coin was struck for a party that was, at the time, effectively the state itself.
