Tunisia's republic was formally proclaimed on July 25, 1957, following the deposition of the last Bey of Tunis, Muhammad VIII al-Amin. The 25th anniversary series came during Bourguiba's late presidency, a period of increasing authoritarianism and economic strain that would culminate in his removal by Ben Ali in 1987 — making these issues, produced across 1983–1986, inadvertent relics of a political order already entering its final chapter.
