Jordan's commemorative coinage program in the 1980s was managed closely by the palace, and issues tied directly to Hussein bin Talal's personal milestones were treated as diplomatic instruments as much as collector pieces — distributed through official channels and gifted to foreign dignitaries. Hussein turned 50 in November 1985, having already ruled for over three decades following his accession at seventeen after his father Talal was deposed on grounds of mental illness.
Mintages for this type were tightly controlled and the coins saw essentially no circulation.
