Tunisia's first gold coinage as an independent state, this issue was authorized almost immediately after the Banque Centrale de Tunisie was established in 1958, replacing the colonial-era Institut d'Émission. The French-legend variant reflects the transitional linguistic reality of the new republic — official documents and currency still carried French text well into the early 1960s, even as the government under Bourguiba pushed aggressively toward Arabization in other spheres of public life.

Two distinct legend varieties exist for this type, French and Arabic, and the French version is generally the scarcer of the pair in high-grade survivors.
