The Banque Centrale de Tunisie was established in 1958, the year after independence from France, replacing the colonial-era Institut d'Émission as Tunisia's sovereign monetary authority. The Medenine branch serves the southeastern governorate bordering Libya — a region historically marginal to the Tunisian banking network but strategically significant given cross-border trade through the Ras Jedir crossing. This commemorative marks the fiftieth year of that institutional transition, one of a regional branch series issued the same year.
