The Banque Centrale de Tunisie was established in 1958, one year after independence, as Tunisia moved to replace the franc-zone institutions inherited from the French protectorate. The 40th anniversary issue in 1998 coincided with a period of institutional consolidation under Ben Ali's government, which had come to power in 1987. The Monastir branch carried particular political weight — Monastir was the birthplace of Habib Bourguiba, the republic's founding president, and remained a site of deliberate symbolic investment throughout both his tenure and his successor's.
The French-legend variant exists alongside an Arabic-legend counterpart, reflecting Tunisia's bilingual administrative practice rather than any separate issuing authority.
