The Banque Centrale de Tunisie was established in 1958, shortly after independence from France, taking over functions previously held by the Banque de l'Algérie et de la Tunisie. The 40th anniversary issue in 1998 also commemorates the Monastir branch specifically — Monastir being the birthplace of Habib Bourguiba, Tunisia's first president, which gave the city outsized institutional significance throughout his rule despite his removal from power in 1987.
