Jordan issued this coin to mark two simultaneous occasions: the turn of the millennium and the site of Jesus's baptism at Al-Maghtas on the eastern bank of the Jordan River. The Jordanian government had been pressing for international recognition of Al-Maghtas — rather than the western bank site promoted by Israel — as the authentic baptism location, and the coin's release coincided directly with that diplomatic and religious campaign. John Paul II visited the site in March 2000, lending it significant credibility.
UNESCO designated Al-Maghtas a World Heritage Site in 2015, vindicating years of Jordanian advocacy that this coin effectively announced to the numismatic world fifteen years earlier.
