| Additional information |
Abdelhamid Benbadis — born 1889 in Constantine, died 1940 — was the founding president of the Association of Algerian Muslim Ulema, the reformist religious body that pushed Arabic-language education and Islamic identity as deliberate resistance to French assimilation policy. His commemoration on Algerian coinage came more than half a century after his death, during a period when the state was actively reclaiming nationalist cultural figures following the devastating civil conflict that erupted after the 1991 elections were annulled.
The .835 fineness places this squarely in Algeria's commemorative silver program of the 1990s rather than any circulating issue.
