Sudan's 2003 coinage was issued during a period when the country operated two parallel monetary systems — the standard Sudanese pound in the north and a separate structure in southern regions, reflecting the unresolved civil war that had dragged on since 1983. The Bank of Sudan issued these higher-denomination brass coins partly to address chronic small-denomination shortages caused by hoarding during the conflict.
The Comprehensive Peace Agreement ending that war came just two years later, in 2005, triggering a full monetary overhaul and the eventual introduction of the Sudanese pound in 2007 — rendering this dinar coinage obsolete within a few years of striking.
