The 7 November 1987 coup removed Habib Bourguiba — Tunisia's independence architect and president-for-life — through a medical declaration of incompetence orchestrated by Prime Minister Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. No shot was fired. Ben Ali then institutionalized the date as a national holiday, and the Tunisian mint commemorated successive anniversaries with silver issues of this kind, a practice that continued until the 2011 revolution swept Ben Ali himself from power after 23 years.
