The "coup d'état" this coin commemorates is the November 7, 1987 removal of Habib Bourguiba by Prime Minister Zine El Abidine Ben Ali — a bloodless palace coup framed as a medical incapacitation under Article 57 of the Tunisian constitution. Ben Ali had Bourguiba declared mentally unfit by seven doctors in a single night. The 2007 issue appeared while Ben Ali was still in power, which explains the unapologetic official terminology; four years later, he fled to Saudi Arabia during the Arab Spring, and the framing of November 7 as a liberation became considerably more contested.
