Tunisia's "Coup d'état" commemoratives mark the November 7, 1987 removal of Habib Bourguiba by Prime Minister Zine El Abidine Ben Ali — a bloodless palace coup executed on the medical pretext that Bourguiba, then 84, was mentally unfit to govern. Ben Ali's government rebranded the event as a "Change," and these annual gold issues were a deliberate instrument of that official narrative, minted each year through his presidency to reinforce the date's legitimacy. The 19th anniversary issue appeared just five years before the 2011 revolution that ended Ben Ali's own 23-year rule.
