The "coup d'état" this coin commemorates is the November 7, 1987 removal of Habib Bourguiba by Prime Minister Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, carried out under a medical pretext — a team of doctors certified Bourguiba mentally unfit to govern, allowing Ben Ali to assume the presidency without a shot fired. By 2005, the regime was issuing bilingual commemoratives in both Arabic and French legend variants, the latter aimed squarely at collectors in francophone markets and the Tunisian diaspora in France.
