The World Summit on the Information Society was held in two phases: Geneva in 2003 and Tunis in November 2005. Tunisia's hosting of the second phase was itself a diplomatically fraught achievement — the Ben Ali government's well-documented press restrictions drew sharp protests from journalists and civil society groups who argued the host nation was among the least qualified to lead a global conversation about information freedom. The summit proceeded regardless, and the Banque Centrale issued this gold commemorative to mark the occasion.
The French-legend variant exists alongside an Arabic-legend counterpart, both struck for the same event.
