The 1885 series marked the first time Serbia's national bank printed domestically rather than contracting abroad — earlier issues had gone to French and other Western European printers. Bringing production to the State Printery in Belgrade was a deliberate political statement from a kingdom that had only formally gained full independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1878.
The engraving is credited to L. Dumont despite domestic printing, a clear sign that the intaglio plates were produced externally and shipped in. Đorđe Krstić, primarily known as a painter, provided the design — an unusual choice that reflects how thin professional printmaking expertise was in Belgrade at the time.
