Milan Obrenović had himself proclaimed King of Serbia on February 22, 1882 — elevating the principality to a kingdom and, with it, commissioning a new royal coinage to match the title. This 10 Dinara was part of that inaugural royal issue, struck at the Paris Mint, which handled Serbian gold coinage throughout the Obrenović period. The timing was nakedly political: a kingdom needed gold, and gold needed to circulate quickly.
Serbia had joined the Latin Monetary Union framework in practice if not formally, and this piece conforms exactly to its specifications — a deliberate signal of alignment with Western European monetary norms at a moment when Milan was cultivating Habsburg and French patronage against Russian influence.
