| Beschrijving keerzijde | The official emblem of the XX Olympic Games — a stylized sunburst or spiral motif composed of radiating geometric segments — occupies the central field, representing the official Munich 1972 Olympics design. The circular legend 'SPIELE DER XX·OLYMPIADE 1972' arcs around the upper portion of the field, while 'IN MÜNCHEN' appears along the lower arc, all separated by raised dot stops. The design is set within a deeply recessed field against a broad, plain outer rim, consistent with the pattern format of this unique piece. |

This is a pattern strike — a trial piece produced to evaluate the gold format before the decision was made to issue the Munich Olympics commemoratives in silver. The official 10 Mark Olympic series was ultimately struck in .625 silver and distributed across four thematic releases between 1970 and 1972. A gold version never entered circulation or official issue. Pattern pieces of this type were produced in extremely limited numbers, likely for internal Bundesbank or Bundesmünzamt evaluation purposes, and very few have surfaced in public auction.
