Germany issued five distinct 10 Mark silver pieces for the 1972 Munich Olympics, each designed by a different artist and released in successive years beginning in 1970. The games themselves became permanently associated with the massacre of eleven Israeli athletes and coaches by the Black September organization on September 5th — an event that briefly halted competition before IOC president Avery Brundage controversially ordered the games to continue.
The .625 fineness was a deliberate compromise, keeping silver content low enough to discourage melting while maintaining the appearance of a precious-metal commemorative.
