| Reverse description | The reverse features a rampant heraldic lion at center, derived from the celebrated Romanesque bronze Lion Monument of Brunswick (Braunschweiger Löwe), commissioned by Henry the Lion himself, rendered in high relief with ornate stylized mane and curling tail. Surrounding the lion in the field are abstract decorative motifs in the Romanesque illuminated manuscript tradition, suggestive of the celebrated Gospel Book of Henry the Lion. The legend 'HEINRICVS' arcs across the upper field, with 'DVX BAVARIAE' continuing to the right and 'ET SAXONIE' along the lower arc, all in Latin using medieval orthography. The dates '1129/30' appear to the upper right and '1195' to the lower left, marking the duke's birth and death years respectively. |
