The Aquarius coin is part of Macedonia's twelve-piece zodiac series issued by the National Bank beginning in 2008, each struck in .925 silver at a relatively modest mintage intended for the collector market. KM#44 places this squarely within that run.
Macedonia's decision to produce themed collector silver during this period reflected a broader strategy among smaller Balkan states to generate numismatic revenue while the dinar-successor denar remained inconvertible and internationally obscure.
