Vietnam's late-1980s coinage program coincided with the Đổi Mới economic reforms launched in 1986, which dismantled central planning and reopened Vietnam to foreign trade — a political pivot so sharp it rendered much of the preceding monetary apparatus obsolete almost immediately. Coins from this transitional window circulated briefly before rampant inflation made low-denomination metal coinage economically pointless, which is why many survivors show little wear.
The KM#37.1 designation distinguishes this from a minor variant; collectors should confirm the specific edge treatment before attributing.
