The Investiture of Prince Charles as Prince of Wales took place at Caernarfon Castle on 1 July 1969 — a ceremony deliberately staged by the Wilson government to shore up support for the Crown in Wales amid rising nationalist sentiment. Plaid Cymru had won its first parliamentary seat two years earlier, and the choice of Caernarfon was pointed. By the tenth anniversary in 1979, commemorative issues from dependent territories had become a reliable revenue stream, with the Turks and Caicos Islands among the more prolific participants in this market during the late 1970s.
