Issued on the centenary of the First World War, this coin commemorates John McCrae's poem written in May 1915 following the death of his friend Lieutenant Alexis Helmer near Ypres. McCrae composed the verses the morning after Helmer's burial, reportedly in under twenty minutes, on the back of a field dispatch. The poem was initially rejected by Punch before being published there in December 1915 and becoming one of the most reproduced English-language poems of the war.
Gibraltar's frequent use of large-format gold-plated silver issues for centenary commemoratives drew criticism from some collectors for prioritizing visual impact over numismatic restraint.
