Nicaragua's Paslama turtle coins are part of a long-running wildlife series issued through the Banco Central, but the Paslama — the local name for the olive ridley sea turtle — carries specific conservation weight: Nicaragua's Pacific coast hosts some of the largest mass nesting events, called arribadas, in the entire Western Hemisphere, concentrated primarily at Chacocente and La Flor wildlife refuges. Both sites have been under formal governmental protection since the 1980s, though enforcement against poaching remained inconsistent for decades.
KM#153 is a one-troy-ounce fine silver bullion-adjacent issue, though its mintage figures are not widely documented in major references.
