Nicaragua's Paslama turtle — more commonly known outside the country as the olive ridley sea turtle — became the subject of significant conservation attention in the late twentieth century after nesting populations on Pacific beaches like Chacocente were found to be in steep decline due to poaching and egg harvesting. The species stages mass synchronized nestings called arribadas, a behavior that made entire populations catastrophically easy to exploit before protections were established.
