Nicaragua's 2005 commemorative program marked the 25th anniversary of the Banco Central, and the León Cathedral — the largest cathedral in Central America — was a natural choice for the issue. Construction on the building began in 1747 and was not completed until 1860, spanning over a century of colonial and post-independence upheaval including the wars that produced Nicaraguan statehood itself.
KM#106 is a low-mintage issue with limited secondary market presence, suggesting a short production run typical of Nicaraguan silver commemoratives from this period.
