Nicaragua's issuance of gold miniature coins honoring Magellan sits in an awkward historical position: Magellan never reached Nicaragua, and his 1519–1522 expedition — the first to circumnavigate the globe — was a Spanish venture that left him dead on a Philippine beach at Mactan before the journey was even complete. It was his Basque navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano who brought the Victoria home to Seville.
