Nicaragua's issuance of gold miniature coins honoring Magellan sits in an awkward historical position: Magellan never reached Nicaragua, and his 1519–1522 expedition — the first to circumnavigate the globe — was a Spanish venture that left him dead on a Philippine beach at Mactan before the journey was even complete. It was his Basque navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano who brought the Victoria home to Seville.

The .585 fineness places this squarely in 14-karat territory, a common choice for low-weight bullionette issues aimed at the souvenir and collector markets rather than any investment function.
