The Banco Nacional de Nicaragua was itself an unusual institution — established in 1912 under heavy American influence during the U.S. occupation, it functioned for years less as a sovereign central bank than as a jointly managed fiscal instrument, with Washington retaining significant oversight over Nicaraguan monetary affairs well into the 1930s. The ABNC contract for this series was a direct consequence of that arrangement; American-controlled finances naturally ran through American printing houses.
The 1929–1939 span covers the full withdrawal of U.S. Marines, completed in 1933, and the early Somoza consolidation. Notes from the later part of the date range circulated under substantially different political conditions than those issued at the start.
