Banco Occidental was one of several Guatemalan private banks authorized to issue currency under the country's pre-1926 banking law. That framework collapsed almost immediately after this note was printed — the Banco Central de Guatemala was established in 1926, absorbing or displacing the private issuers and rendering notes like this one obsolete within a year of printing.

ABNC produced the plates in New York, a standard arrangement for Central American private banks of the period who lacked access to domestic security printing. The P#196 series is scarce; Banco Occidental had a smaller circulation footprint than contemporaries like Banco de Guatemala, and surviving issued examples are genuinely difficult to locate.
