Reverse description A plain, unadorned draped bust of President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta is portrayed in left-facing profile, filling the majority of the field. The effigy depicts Kenyatta in a suit with a loosely knotted necktie, rendered in a restrained, naturalistic style by engraver Norman Sillman. The reverse field is entirely devoid of legend or inscription, consistent with the type designation 'Without legend'. A raised rim frames the design on all sides.

Additional information

Kenya's first coinage as an independent republic launched in 1966, replacing the East African Currency Board issues that had circulated across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania under a shared colonial monetary arrangement. The "Without legend" designation distinguishes this type from a later variety — the reverse carries no "Republic of Kenya" inscription, a detail corrected in subsequent issues as the new central bank refined its house style.
