| Reverse description | A plain, unadorned draped bust of President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta is portrayed in left-facing profile, filling the majority of the field. The effigy depicts Kenyatta in a suit with a loosely knotted necktie, rendered in a restrained, naturalistic style by engraver Norman Sillman. The reverse field is entirely devoid of legend or inscription, consistent with the type designation 'Without legend'. A raised rim frames the design on all sides. |

| Additional information |
Kenya's first coinage as an independent republic launched in 1966, replacing the East African Currency Board issues that had circulated across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania under a shared colonial monetary arrangement. The "Without legend" designation distinguishes this type from a later variety — the reverse carries no "Republic of Kenya" inscription, a detail corrected in subsequent issues as the new central bank refined its house style.
