| Obverse description | Young draped effigy of Queen Victoria facing left, wearing a small crown, her hair drawn back. The legend VICTORIA QUEEN arcs around the periphery of the coin. The portrait is rendered in the style characteristic of William Wyon's early Victorian coinage designs. The field is plain, with the bust occupying the central portion of the flan. |

The 1862 Hong Kong 10-cent coinage emerged from early British efforts to standardize a reliable subsidiary silver currency for the colony, where Spanish and Mexican milled dollars had long dominated trade. The Royal Mint produced trial strikes that year to test specifications before committing to full production runs — KM#Pn53 is among those exploratory pieces, struck in reduced-fineness silver rather than the .900 standard that would eventually be adopted.
Full circulation issue of the 10-cent denomination followed in 1863.
