The Straits Settlements operated as a Crown Colony administered by the British India Office until 1867, when control transferred to the Colonial Office in London — a bureaucratic shift that directly prompted the establishment of a more regularized local coinage. Before this series, Spanish and Mexican silver dollars circulated freely alongside a chaotic mix of foreign issues. KM#11 was struck at the Royal Mint in London across its entire run, with no branch mint involvement.
The .800 fineness was a deliberate departure from sterling, chosen to discourage melting in a region where silver bullion prices fluctuated sharply with Indian Ocean trade flows.
