| Obverse description | Left-facing laureate effigy of Queen Victoria, her hair elaborately styled and gathered at the nape, adorned with a laurel wreath rendered in fine detail by engraver Leonard Charles Wyon. The truncation of the neck is square and unadorned. The surrounding legend reads VICTORIA D: G: REG: NEWFOUNDLAND, separated by raised dots, and is contained within a toothed border. The portrait is executed in the young-head style characteristic of early Victorian colonial coinage, with high relief and crisp sculptural definition. |
