Hong Kong's colonial coinage was struck almost exclusively at the Royal Mint in London and, from 1872 onward, at the Heaton Mint in Birmingham — a private contractor given the work because the Royal Mint was periodically overwhelmed by imperial demand. The Heaton pieces carry an "H" mintmark and are generally less common than their London counterparts, though neither is scarce in absolute terms given the volume required to service a rapidly expanding entrepôt economy.
The .800 fineness was a deliberate concession to the silver trade dollar ecosystem of southern China, where full-fineness coins were routinely tested, chopmarked, and melted by merchants who trusted weight and purity over issuing authority.
