The "Survivor of Africa" series emerged from South Africa's post-apartheid mint program to leverage the country's wildlife as a vehicle for collector silver, competing directly with established bullion and numismatic series from Perth and the Royal Canadian Mint. The white rhino, once hunted to near-extinction in the late 19th century, had recovered in KwaZulu-Natal through conservation efforts that were, at the time of this issue, considered one of the more credible large-mammal recovery stories on the continent.
Hern's cataloguing as WL15 places it within a short-lived run that was discontinued well before the series gained the secondary-market traction its producers anticipated.
