| Obverse description | Left-facing effigy of President Nicolaas J. Diederichs, depicted in a suit and tie and wearing spectacles, engraved in a restrained, realistic portrait style by Lourens de Lange. The bilingual legend SOUTH AFRICA · SUID-AFRIKA arcs around the upper periphery, divided at the apex. The date 1979 appears in the lower exergue, flanked by small ornamental stops. The designer's initials LDL are present in the lower field near the bust truncation. |

| Reverse description | A boldly rendered large numeral 10 dominates the upper field, with the stems of a flowering aloe plant rising dramatically behind and through the digits, its characteristic rosette of succulent leaves spread across the lower field. The engraver's initials T.S. (Tommy Sasseen) appear at the base of the design near the rim. The composition is clean with no peripheral legend, the denomination and botanical motif forming the entire design. |
