Jamaica decimalized its currency in 1969, replacing the colonial pound system with the Jamaican dollar, and the 10-cent denomination entered circulation as part of that first decimal series. The "narrow legend" designation distinguishes this type from a later variant — a subtle spacing change in the inscription that creates two collectible sub-types within what most buyers treat as a single issue.
The non-magnetic copper-nickel composition was later replaced with a magnetic alloy as cost pressures mounted in the 1980s, making this the original production type for the series.
