Belize achieved full independence from Britain in 1981, but this coin predates that — issued when the country was still British Honduras transitioning under the name Belize, newly adopted in 1973. The Central Bank began issuing a distinctive wildlife series at that moment of national redefinition, the long-tailed hermit hummingbird among the fauna chosen to anchor the new currency's identity in the natural environment rather than colonial imagery.
The .925 silver version was struck for collectors rather than circulation, a common Commonwealth practice of the period for newly independent or transitioning territories building numismatic revenue.
