Belize gained independence from Britain in September 1981, and the 1982 coinage was among the first series issued under the newly established Central Bank — itself created by the Monetary Authority of Belize Act of 1982. The Long-Tailed Hermit series was part of a deliberate national identity project, replacing the old British Honduras designs with indigenous wildlife.
The hummingbird chosen belongs to the genus Phaethornis, native to Belize's lowland forests.
