Ceylon's wartime coinage underwent a forced composition change when nickel shortages — driven by Allied military demand — pushed the colonial administration toward nickel brass as a substitute. The 1944 issue falls within this brief transitional window before postwar supply chains normalized and pre-war alloys returned.
