Ceylon's shift to decimal coinage was completed in 1972 with the republic's founding, but trial strikes in aluminium were being tested in 1971 as the government evaluated lightweight coinage suitable for the new monetary system. This piece predates that transition by months, produced before Ceylon ceased to exist as a political entity entirely.
