Issued to mark the 500th anniversary of John Cabot's 1497 voyage from Bristol aboard the Matthew, which reached the coast of North America — most likely Newfoundland or Cape Breton — and claimed the land for Henry VII. The expedition was financed partly by Bristol merchants and resulted in a patent granting Cabot and his sons rights to discovered territories, though the Crown paid him just £10 upon return.
The commemorative was struck in .925 silver rather than the standard nickel composition of circulation dimes, making it a collector-only issue from the outset.
