New Zealand's coinage underwent a quiet but consequential transition during this period. The switch from magnetic to non-magnetic copper-nickel in the late 1990s was driven by vending machine and automated handling compatibility — magnetic coins were increasingly causing sorting errors in modern equipment. The "large type" designation distinguishes these from the 2006 downsizing, when New Zealand's 10-cent piece was reduced significantly and the entire coin family was restructured, eliminating the 5-cent denomination entirely.
