The Solomon Islands gained independence in 1978 and established its own decimal coinage almost immediately, but the transition from colonial penny-based currency took years to complete in outer island commerce. The non-magnetic copper-nickel composition distinguishes this issue from the later steel-core pieces introduced as production costs rose across Pacific island minting programs in the 1990s. Raphael Maklouf's third portrait of Elizabeth II, adopted across Commonwealth territories from 1985 onward, appears here in its early Pacific application.
