Fiji's shift from cupronickel to nickel-plated steel for this denomination was driven by rising base metal costs in the late 1980s, a pattern seen across Pacific island issuers reliant on foreign minting contracts. These were struck at the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra, which had handled Fijian coinage since the country's decimal transition in 1969.
The "large type" distinction separates this from the reduced-size 10 cents introduced in 2006, when Fiji undertook a coinage downsizing to cut production costs ahead of the political turbulence that followed Bainimarama's December coup that same year.
