The 1953 Canadian coinage series introduced Mary Gillick's effigy of the newly crowned Elizabeth II, but the portrait caused immediate production problems. The relief was too high for clean striking across the full run, and the RCM had to modify the dies mid-year — shallowing the shoulder fold and adding a rim to the hair — creating the well-documented "no shoulder fold" and "shoulder fold" varieties that define the 1953 issue specifically.
Silver was abandoned entirely after 1964, replaced by nickel the following year. The timing was driven by rising silver prices eroding the bullion value of circulating coins toward face value.
